With lighting making up approximately 10% of the world’s electricity consumption, it is then imperative to continuously improve the efficiency of light sources to help reduce worldwide carbon emissions. Thanks to their superior energy efficiency and long lifetime, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can greatly contribute to this global goal. When applied together with advanced lighting control technologies, for example in street lighting and building automation, energy savings for homeowners and communities and, ultimately for the planet, can be pushed even further. A number of programs and initiatives have been deployed worldwide to support and direct this global energy saving effort including the Energy Star program (US EPA) and the Energy Savings Trust (EST) Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE).
