OpenThread protocol implements all Thread networking layers (IPv6, 6LoWPAN, IEEE 802.15.4 with MAC security, Mesh Link Establishment, Mesh Routing) and device roles, as well as Border Router support. It requires a small memory footprint and is highly portable. It is ideally suited for IPv6 based low power wireless device to device communication for home applications.

Based on ST’s best-in-class, ultra-low-power STM32L4 microcontrollers, STM32WB dual-core wireless MCUs with OpenThread stack supports the IEEE 802.15.4 communication protocol in both single and concurrent mode, covering a wide spectrum of IoT application needs.

The STM32WB is a certified component for whatever Full Thread Device (FTD) or Minimal Thread Device (MTD) type of role is intended.

802.15.1 OpenThread SOC

STM32WB dual-core wireless MCU series and its certified OpenThread software stack give you access to an OpenThread solution for IP-based low-power wireless mesh networks which also supports BLE 5.2 concurrent mode.IEEE 802.15.4 is a technical standard – maintained by the IEEE 802.15 working group – that defines the physical layer and media access control (MAC) specifications for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs).

It thus provides a generic standard MAC layer that can be the basis for protocols – including ZigBee and Thread – which then define the upper layers of the stack. OpenThread in an open-source implementation of Thread® standard based on the broadly supported IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard.
